Various: There are antibody panels (in which the diagnosis is retrospective), and pcrs and non-specific indicators as well as cultures for some.  These may be viral, mycoplasma, chlamydia, legionella, tb, fungal and others.  The tests ordered will depend upon the history and physical exam and initial lab results.

Atypical pneumonia: The classic form on pneumonia presents with abrupt onset of cough, high fever, shaking shills, production of rusty colored sputum, and profound malaise. This is usually caused by the pneumococcus germ. There are several types of lung infection with a slower mode of onset and takes longer to diagnosis. The classic example of this is legionaire's disease, but there are other forms as well.

Non typical agents: Term atypical used fot pneumonias which are not caused by typical bacteria causing it such as strep pneumonia, klebsiella, moraxella, etc. Usual cause for atypical pneumonia is mycoplasma pneumonia, but any un conventional agent which causes pneumonia could be called atypical.

Could be: Atypical pneumonia often caused by mycoplasma. This organism could trigger asthma in patients who are suffering from asthma eventhough their asthma is under control. Such a patient might need step up treatment for asthma. Uncontrolled asthma could be dangerous.

Infection?: Atypical pneumonia should be cured long ago if now asymptomatic. With elevated esr implies infection or inflammation somewhere in body. Should contact physician for examination and testing.

She should relax: Atypical pneumonia is sometimes caused by a bacteria, and sometimes by a virus.  It's a more benign type, and often caused by stress.  What does her doctor say?

DR for evaluation: Need to see physician to find cause of elevated ESR. Could be related to infection elsewhere in the body or recurrent lung problem. May require other blood tests or imaging studies to figure out cause.
