what is it like to used the drug dupliumab for atopic dermatitis?

May improve rash: Dupliumab is a monoclonal antibody that binds the alpha subunit of the IL-4 receptor modulating the IL-4 and Il-13 pathways.  This drug is still under investigation, but it does appear to have benefit in decreasing the number of asthma exacerbations in patients with allergic asthma.  Atopic dermatitis is thought to be due to some of the same triggers and thus may respond also.

Yes: Use skin cleansers instead of soap for washing or bathing. You can get cetaphil moisturizing cream, cerave, eucerin and the like . You can apply otc steroid creams till you see your doctor, moderate to severe eczema needs a stronger steroid cream and close follow up. Be sure not to get infected.

Rarely: While some atopic patients can become so severe that their condition progresses to an exfoliative dermatitis this is very rare.  We also call exfoliative dermatitis "erythroderma" depending on the clinical appearance.  If you have this then you need a dermatologist.  This can be a very challenging thing to treat.

Yes, Interchangeable: Atopic dermatitis and eczema are usually interchangeable because they mean the same condition.  However, you could have eczema which could be localized such as nummular eczema which is not atopic dermatitis.  The term atopic is associated with allergy.  Patients with atopic dermatitis do suffer from other conditions such as asthma also.

Allergy: Atopia means allergy. Dermatitis means skin rash. It's simply an allergic skin rash.

No cure: Unforturnately, atopic dermatitis is a chronic medical condition for which there is currently no cure. Symptoms are usually dry irritated itchy skin. The severity can vary with the seasons and different exposures. Treatment consists of using fragrance-free moisturizers, sometimes in combination with topical steroids. See your doctor if the condition is bothersome.

Cure not possible: Unfortunately there really isn't a cure for atopic dermatitis.  But it is definitely treatable.  I often tell patients that if using a moisturizer 3-5 times a day may not be enough.  And always remember that it is possible that the diagnosis needs to be reconsidered.  This may not your case but it is always something that needs to be pondered. Particularly if a patients not getting better.

Accepted Answer

Treatable!: Atopic dermatitis can be treated but not cured.  With proper management,  a person can remain symptom free, and have beautiful skin.  One must remain diligent in keeping good care of their skin.  Mild soaps should be used to bathe the skin, and thick moisturing creams should be applied immediately after bathing to keep moisture in the skin.  Topical steroids and immunomodulaters can also be used.
