Your docotr needs to do lung trests to establish diagnosis of asthma along with clinicla diagnosis.Some pts. Cough at night only & it becomes difficult 2diagnose as the docotr may not be able to listen for wheezing at this time unless u go 2 the er. All coughs is not asthma.

Matter of degree/sx: Cva is what i would consider one of the mildest forms of asthma. In season one may cough intermittently without actually wheezing&be treated for a number of things before the tie in with asthma is realized. Often a simple steroid inhaler will stop the cough after a few days where abx & cough meds have no effect. Suspicion comes when you have kin with asthma.

Cough : Persistent cough can be due to sinus infections, asthma, smoking, lung infection or disease and GERD.  If your cough has lasted more than 2-3 weeks whether persistent or intermittent you really need to see your doctor and go through the list of possibilities for you.  A cough is a mechanical way for the body to eliminate mucous from the lung which is normally migrates out without any effort.

There isn't any: Unfortunately there isn't any medication specifically to treat cough-variant asthma that is available otc. You can, however, use some cough suppressant such as delsym/robitussin etc...But these only suppress the cough, maybe. So if you have prolonged, persistent cough, i suggest getting evaluated/treated. Reflux  and allergies sometime cough symptoms. So, check with doc. Good luck.

Yes: All forms of asthma are based in inflammation causing airway hyperreactivity and spasm.  That being said, allergens can also trigger asthma symptoms, which might explain the seasonality of these symptoms (i.e. Ragweed in the fall and environmental molds in the winter).

Inhaled steroids: Cough variant asthma caused by inflammation is best treated by inhaled steroids. Check with your medical provider to determine the best one for your child.
