Controllers: Controller medicines help your airways heal and prevent asthma attacks. Besides advair, there's symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) and plain steroid inhalers like flovent, qvar, pulmicort. There's also singulair. Take your controllers regularly when colds weather hits. Any other factors during chilly weather time? Forced air heating with dirty filters=more dust? More mildew or mold?

Yes: All asthma attacks are caused by various triggers, including allergens such as dust mites, animal dander, foods or pollen, irritants such as tobacco smoke, acid reflux, viral or bacterial infections, exercise, cold exposure, emotional stress, or medications such as beta blockers or nsaids. All individuals with asthma are not the same, so, not all asthma attacks are brought on by the same trigger.

Asthma: Generally any asthma can be triggered by both exercise and cold weather exposure. Some patients with asthma can run fine in warm weather but have less tolerance and wheeze and cough, develop chest tightness and pain when running in cold weather.

i have asthma and in the winter when i go running the cold air makes it really painful. should i be on a different medication for this issue?

Probably not: Cold air is a tenacious trigger for asthma - there really is no way to treat it with medications. The only way to get some relief is to cover your mouth and nose with a scarf of cold weather mask. These trap the moisture from your breath, which then warms and humidifies the cold, dry air that you next inhale. Trying to inhale through the nose does the same thing, but is difficult during exertion.

i have just started feeling like i am breathing in cold air with slight discomfort. i do not have asthma but have had something like one please help?

Possible asthma: Breathing cold air can cause your airways to close down if you have asthma, or, it can just be uncomfortable to the throat.  If it makes you cough or wheeze (high-pitched noise when you breath out), or if it happens a lot and is a big problem, talk to your doctor about it.  Wearing a scarf over your mouth when it's cold, or breathing through your nose can also help.

Consider other cause: Cold air exposure is a common trigger. Could be undiagnosed/improperly treated asthma or another condition that mimics asthma like vocal cord dysfunction. Would suggest seeing specialist for further workup and evaluation. An allergist would be someone good to talk to.

my daughter,6 years old, has exercise induced and seasonal asthma. she has been cough so much she pukes from bronchitis. she is on proair,augmentin and orapred. we have done steam,cold air ect...nothing is stopping her cough. anything more we can do?

Asthma: If your child is not well controlled on her current asthma regimen, please discuss with your doctor.  You should have a plan for exacerbations, which can occur with viral infections, colds, or even cold exposure.  Especially since her symptoms are Seasonal, you should have an asthma action plan or a more intensive regimen  for more severe seasons.   Consider seeing a pulmonologist.
