Unlikely: This would be unlikely unless there is some type of aspiration event. When there is aspiration of liquid food we have a reflex to shut off the upper airway. This usually results in difficulty breathing in, coughing, talking and respiratory distress. It would not last as long as a typical asthma attach. Acid reflux can give a sensation of shortness of breath

i have had shortness of breath for 4 months, it never goes away fully. no coughing or wheezing. can an asthma attack last for 4 months, what else?

Yes: But you will need to consult your doctor to make sure that asthma is the cause since there are many other causes for  shortness of breath.

Does not matter: It is persistent asthma that is uncontrolled and symptomatic. Nightly awakenings are likely also. 

More importantly, the dose of anti-inflammatory medication must be increased, for example inhaled steroids. To be safe check with your lung doc to make nothing else is going on - although unlikely.

i've been told that cs gas can cause an asthma attack to somebody with mild asthma. how severe would this attack be? would it be full blown needing a hospital or just wheezing and shortness of breath? i've gotten a 76% on my asthma test.

Peak flow: of 76% is good , so long you have no symptoms like shortness of breath or cough,  CS gas or any irritant can stimulate an asthma attack, just try to avoid exposure, take your controller and rescue medicines as prescribed

i have a hating hernia and also suffering stomach pain and constipation.  i also have nitrolingual to use as needed. i have had an asthma attack in the last week but my shortness of breath is extreme however my sats on my oximeter are okay just tachy?

Shortness of breath: It could be cardiac or pulmonic. It could be asthma. You need to see your physician and for physical and work-up.

Short of breath: Pulmonary disease is very common, obstructive pulmonary disease is a common cause, weakness of respiratory muscles and interstitial lung disease all do the same as well as a bunch of other things; the heart is just one of many causes of sob, anemia can do it too.

Limited space: When you bend, you compress your lungs, making it harder to breathe and more noticeable when you have limited lung reserve.

Accepted Answer

Possibly: It is possible that if your asthma is uncontrolled you could experience frequent shortness of breath.  Every five minutes is excessive even for poorly controlled asthma.  It may be worth checking a peak flow rate which is an index of how severe your asthma is on a daily basis.  You can get a peak flow meter from your doctor.

No: However, asthma usually also has cough and/ or wheezing.  Shortness of breath can be a symptom of many different underlying causes.  You should see your doctor.
