need alternative to zirtec for allergy-induced asthma. allegra and benadryl (diphenhydramine) don't work, nor albuterol asthma inhalars. claritin gives me nasal pain.

Allergic help: You will definitely need to speak with your physician about this.  Other alternatives include the short acting chlorphenamine (chlortrimetron), sold over the counter.  There are prescription medications - xyzal, singulair, xopenex, (levalbuterol) Flonase and more.  Ultimately - make sure you speak with your physician about this, since the medications you have tried so far are not providing relief for you.

what is good otc antihistamine to take for someone have asthma..i take clarity sometimes but it makes me drowsy and sleepy..is allegra (fexofenadine) better?

Yes: Allegra has little or no sedating effects. However any AH can be taken with asthma and control of nasal symptoms may potentially improve asthma as well.

i'm having an exercise induced asthma attack and don't have my inhaler. i took allegra (fexofenadine) this morning but would taking another help?

Not likely: EIA is a result of muscular spasm of the alveoli of the lungs. An antihistamine, such as Allegra, (fexofenadine) will not relieve this. You need an inhaler to control this. In a pinch, caffeine (coffee,tea,chocolate) may help.

hi, i have allergic rhinitis and asthma, since my allergies are very strong i drink allegra daily can i take benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night?

Yes: one dose of benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night (25mg) is safe. However use it only when absolutely necessary. Antihistamine overdose can make you dehydrated, have a fast heart rate and feel anxious.

my doctor said that benadryl (diphenhydramine) could make an asthma attack worse. but that zyrtec or allegra would be better. why?

Antihistamines dry: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is more drying than the newer antihistamines in general, and we worry that occasionally an antihistamine will dry secretions so much that they will solidify inside you. This is rare, but has happened. When it first came out, Benadryl (diphenhydramine) was actually a treatment for asthma and one of my patients says they flew it to dallas from st. Louis to treat her asthma! she was 6 mo old & it saved her.

what can you do for asthma treatment if i am on 250 seretide inhaler 2 puffs twice a day, taking more than 4 puffs of ventolin everyday, taking montelukast everyday, taking fexofenadine with highest dosage they can give everyday

With work doc: You need to get in with your PCP or asthma doc and work on your asthma action plan. Use of ventolin several times a day means you are in poor control and need a better plan of action. Your seretide likely needs adjusting but you may need a burst of oral steroids to start. A personal peak flow meter &amp; diary are also important.

? dry skin: That's usually the case with atopic individuals,as you said you have asthma too, you may or may not start to have rash with continuous itching, antihistamines will just control the itch, skin care in form of bathing with cream soap, moisturizing your skin right after bathing while the skin is still moist, all that would help, keep your body well hydrated and watch your environment (cats,dust )
