The other person may have sores on his or her genitals, lips, fingers, etc..., and transmit viruses by touching the uninfected person. Some infected persons (usually women) can occasionally transmit genital herpes even when they don't have visible fresh herpes sores.

Very unlikely: Transfer of an HSV infection from the area first involved to another area is called auto-inoculation. It sometimes occurs during the first infection, i.e. within several weeks of catching the virus. After that, the immune system prevents auto-inoculation. If someone has had genital or oral herpes more than a few months, it is very unlikely s/he will ever self infect other places on the body.

Herpes: Every sexually active adult and anyone in relationship should be tested for Herpes.  90% of those infected do not have sores or recurring outbreaks but are just as contagious as those that do have sores.  Please get tested. Know your status.

Blisters, sores: Mostly superficial blisters that soon become painful open sores, especially on moist tissues. First infection most severe, usually at directly exposed sites (penis, labia, vaginal opening, etc); often fever and inflamed lymph nodes in the groin. Recurrent outbreaks usually mild, no inflamed nodes or fever; may be preceded by neurologic "prodrome" of tingling etc. See a doctor for exam and testing.

Herpes: In order to get genital herpes, you have to be exposed/contacted at some time--current partner or a previous one.  A blood test can check on your exposure and antibodies.

No, but...: Many things are possible in life, but presume new underwear is "herpes-free."  No worries.  Wear it happily.

Possible: Whenever there is any change in the vagina from any infection, the vaginal discharge composition and balance changes. This makes it easier to get Bacterial Vaginosis which causes the fishy odor.
