i have moles on my head and keep getting more. one is white with a brown ring around it . i also have one that's white with pink around it. cancer?

had a mole removed 2 weeks ago on my leg.  it was black with a bit pink and size of a pencil eraser.  anyway went back to get my results and the dr told me that the mole is very active and that they going to do more test. does it sound like cancer?

Mole: A black skin lesion that is of concern is usually a melanoma. Typically the are managed by excising the melanoma.  Most people will undergo a Mohs microgaphic surgery to accomplish this.

Dermatologist: I am a believer in consulting a dermatologist for any skin lesion that stands out as different from all others on your body and especially if it exhibits changes. You'll also get peace of mind if it's not a melanoma.

i have a small, smooth, square red spot on my forehead. i notice it gets redder, but then goes back to a pink color. is it a mole or cancerous?

Likely hemangioma: Likely it is a small hemangioma- which is a benign tumor of the blood vessel. It  can get redder if the circulation on that area increased- for instance after coughing, getting upset  etc- and will go back to pink when blood flow gets back to normal again. However, nothing can substitute clinical examination- ask your primary care doctor to check it out. Does not sound like a mole.

Changing mole: It can be hard to tell sometimes but for the lay person, any mole that is changing color, character, bleeds, gets darker, gets irregular or has symptoms, should be examined by a physician knowlegeable about such lesions.  A dermatologist is a specialist in this area.  If you are even in doubt, get it checked out.  Google warning signs of skin cancers.

Skin cancer : Most skin cancers are the result of excessive sun exposure/tanning.  Genetics play a strong role too.  Any skin lesion that is changing size, color, shape  or an area that does not heal is suspicious for skin cancer and should be evaluated by a dermatologist .  Moles with jagged borders, various colors (brown, black, sometimes red) ,  asymmetrical , bigger than pencil head eraser are suspicious.

Depends on the mole: While moles are generally benign, or non-cancerous, there are some that can contain cancer. One class of mole, called congenital giant nevus, is very large and dark and can become a melanoma. Typical moles are very unlikely to be cancerous, but any concerning lesion should be evaluated by a physician.
