Accepted Answer

Confusing: most people would rather not have diarrhea or soft stools, and constipation might mean everything from less frequent stools to inability to have a bowel movement. Please clarify and ask again.

how do you not get diarrhea when taking the antidepressant escitalopram?

Depends: Diarrhea as well as abdominal cramping is a very common side effect of escitalopram. For many people that take it, this side effect lessens and diasppears after a couple of weeks. But not everyone is so lucky. If that is the case then i would consult your doctor and decide if another medication would be more appropriate.

Hard to tell: if diarrhea &amp; frequent stools were the result of stress and anxiety, the change may be a result of an antidepressant working. But ask a provider who knows you well, and compare how you're doing now with how it was when you startted the antidepressant.

is it possible to have an upset stomach, gas pains, nausea & diarrhea just from upping an antidepressant? ive been on lexapro 15mg for a year, my psychiatrist just upped it to 20mg about 2-3 weeks ago

GI upset: There is a possibility that an increased dose led to GI symptoms. However, Lexapro is usually pretty well tolerated. The cause of the GI upset may not be due to Lexapro.  If you have GI upset, take the Lexapro with food. You can talk to your doctor about splititng dose &amp; addition of probiotics can help.

i think im constipated. i havent gone to the bathroom since my cone biopsy.ive been drinking water and milk daily, and im taking antidepressants which usually give me diarrhea. but still nothing. its 4 days now. should i be concerned ?

Not yet: i would stop all dairy, increase water intake, 500mg mg citrate(natural calm is a good product(form amazon, walmart) 2x /d and give it a few days, if not benefit an emana may be worth it, and call PCP at that point.

Seek help: Sometimes stomach problems can be side effects of medications used for anxiety and depression. However, for some people, stomach problems can also be a symptom of continued anxiety. You should consult with your prescriber.

Diarrhea : Speak to the prescribing physician regarding your complaint. Often such side effects will resolve with time. If they persist, your physician may advise adjusting the dose, when you take the medication, or possibly a different antidepressant if the side effect is severe. In some cases if the antidepressant is working very well it may be worth adding an agent to treat the complaint.

What's the cause?: Not a weird question at all!  "plugging up" diarrhea will not cure an infection, fix an inflammatory process, improve an ischemic gut, or correct a functional issue.  Medical evaluation is recommended appropriate to the duration of your symptoms, associations (bleeding, weight loss, pain, vomiting), as well as your other medical co-morbidities.  Call your doctor please and get checked.
