Possible: If you start with a viral illness, the bacterial flora of the gut (good bacteria normally there) can get thrown off balance.  Also h.Pylori bacteria can cause reflux issues.  Probiotics as well as otc medications for reflux can be helpful.  If symptoms last more than 2 wks, see your family physician.

Even "functional" syndromes may be present without underlying "disease." if pain with meals consider peptic (acid), biliary, or pancreatic disease. Bleeding or tenderness suggests inflammation, ischemia, or infection. Exquisite tenderness is quite concerning. Drug reaction should resolve on stopping rx.

It will pass: Start with clear liquid like water, soda that is clear, or sports hydration drinks.  Sip often to prevent dehydration.Work up to solids with bland foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, gelatin, or chicken. Avoid alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, dairy & high fat foods. Rest.

Wash hands: Good handwashing is the number one way to prevent infection transmitted by hand to hand contact. Try not to share foods  or silverware and dishes if you know someone is ill and, stay away from people who are sick, .

Within one week.: It depends on severity of the Viral illness. If the baby's virus is not complicated with dehydration etc, baby can return to daycare in one week.

Sips of liquids-: The key is how much vomiting they are doing. If vomiting, wait 2-3 hours and give "small" ( 1/2 oz ) amounts of clear liquids. Don't let them "gulp too fast"-if it stays down then repeat every 30 minutes. Once 3 or 4 liquid feeds have not been vomited, slowly increase the volume every 30 minutes. If no vomit for 3-4 hours then  start the brat diet for diarrhea-bannans, rice, apple, toast. Patience.

Rest: After a stomach virus with vomiting your body is expelling the "poison".  You do this by diarrhea and/or vomiting.  In order to do this you contract your bodies muscles.  They are usually sore for days.
Drink fluids as tolerates, slowly start back to walking and then regular activity.

Sicker with Salmonel: It may be difficult in some cases without stoo; culture.But patients with salmonella are usually sicker, may have high fever and more frequent watery stools which may contain blood/mucus as compared to stomach virus.But some stomach virus may give you similar symptoms and you need a stool culture to differentiate between the two.
