There : There are various things you can do to treat an insect bite in a toddler:
- apply a cold washcloth to any burning, itching or stinging bite
- prevent infection by washing the area with warm water and soap and keeping it clean
- calamine lotion can be helpful for itch, but if the skin is broken from the bite being scratched, it can sting, so be aware.
- oral Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can also help with the itch
- cut the child's fingernails so they can't scratch too much

call your child's doctor if:

- the area appears to be infected.  Signs of this are increasing redness, swelling, pain, and warmth or drainage.
- there are bites on the ear or face.
- if the bite becomes ulcerated or if you suspect a bite from a brown recluse spider or black widow spider.
- any fever.

Call 911 if your child has any difficulty breathing after an insect bite.
