Blood test: There is a blood test (hla-b27) that correlates with ankylosing spondylitis, but it is not perfect: some with as are negative, and some people with positive test do not have as. History, examine and a pelvic x-ray may make the diagnosis (or not). Talk to your doctor or see a rheumatologist.

A.S. often causes: inflammation of the rib cartilages.  When your chest expands as you take a deep breath, the nerves that run along the ribs can send out pain signals to your brain.  "Ouch!" You should talk to your doctor about this.  The inability to take deep breaths &amp; to cough when needed can interfere with normal lung function, making you winded and prone to chest infections. Emphysema!: Everything else about your health is secondary to smoking cessation. What you describe is EMPHYSEMA, and smoking makes the AS worse too. How do you even find time to smoke 60 cigarettes in a day?

Smokers have the worst excuses; "I've been smoking for  XX years, I smoke too much now, It's my only vice..." It's just the drug addiction talking through you, making you see things unrealistically.
