Surgery: Usually an outpatient procedure that involves a midline incision. The cyst, it's tract, and the middle part of the hyoid bone are removed. (search the sistrunk procedure). Most patients do quite well with the procedure.

Depends on situation: Over time these will usually become infected from germs descending from somewhere near the base of the tongue to the cyst.Elective removal by an ENT surgeon is often done beforehand, or may be needed more urgently  if the cyst does become infected.

Thyroglossal Duct: A thyroglossal duct cyst is a congenital anomaly, meaning that you were born with it.  Many times, they get infected and have to be drained.  If no infection or after infection is treated, we usually recommend having them removed.  The procedure to remove it and to reduce the chance of it coming back is called a sistrunk procedure.  See your local ENT doctor for all the specifics.

Duct cyst: A neck mass or a swelling. Cyst like a sack lined and has fluid may increase in time and may get infected. Have your daughter evaluated this my lead to more functional problems.

Thyroglossal cyst: The cystic cavity may drain its contents to the skin at any time. This in effect may cause it to "shrink" although the cyst itself is still present and the abnormal tissue cavity will likely refill itself. Most of these aren't found until adult life, and most present as infections. This cyst can extend from the tongue down into the neck and must be carefully evaluated and possibly removed.

Sistrunk procedure.: Most patients are asleep for this surgery. An incision is made over the cyst. The cyst is removed plus its thin tract, which extends upward near the middle of a small bone called the hyoid, up into the deep muscles of the tongue. The central hyoid and a cuff of deep tongue muscle are removed to ensure the entire tract had been included. This method greatly lowers risk that cyst can reoccur.
