Depends....: Soy and almond milk are gluten & dairy-free, suitable for allergy to milk products or celiac sprue.  Avoid almond milk if you have tree-nut allergies, but soy allergies is also possible...  Almond milk is higher in fat than soy, but because it has less starch, it actually has less calories that soy.  Both have plenty of vitamins and fiber, but soy has more protein.  Depends on what you want...

Soy milk: Rice milk and soy milk are ok and reasonable substitutes for cows milk in allergic individuals.

Food allergy: Food allergy is defined by a reprodicible symptom that occurs after eating it; if any food seems to cause repeated symptoms, avoidance is the only answer. The presence of allergic antibody (ige) to a food, noted by blood testiing or skin testing alone does not prove allergy.

my 15 month old baby who is on soy based formula has suddenly developed eczema , the doctor advised to switch to soy because he is allergic to cows milk.soy milk appears to be the problem now, should i switch back to cows milk?

Soy allergy: Very often milk and soy allergies are co-existent. Please discuss the use of a hypoallergenic formula and food allergy CAP testing with your pediatrician. Skin care includes avoiding immersion in water, use of a baby eczema cream several times daily and a low dose steroid cream twice daily.

my 4 month old baby has an allergic reaction to milk formula and has switched to soy without problems.  when should he have an allergy test?

No rush if soy OK: Was the reaction skin, respiratory or gastrointestinal (gi)? Was there blood in the feces? If symptoms were completely GI & associated with pallor or floppiness think enterocolitis. This non-ige mediated milk allergy reaction may persist for several years. Only valid test is oral challenge carefully performed by an experienced allergist. For skin & respiratory symptoms skin or blood test at 1 year.

Not per se: Soy contains plant phytoestrogens which are weak (very weak) activators of the estrogen receptor. The word "estrogen" commonly refers to 17-beta-estradiol, the most potent of the estrogen receptor stimulators found in the natural human circulation.
