Beta blocker: Sotalol is in the Beta Blocker class and can cause slowing of the heart rate, therefore it would not be unusual for your heart rate to increase on stopping

Visit returns: Frequency for re checks really depends on the problem(s) and the symptoms. Not knowing what your surgeries were or the success of the ablation it is hard to say. If all has been repaired and no symptoms and sinus rhythm are stable, then yearly visits would likely be fine. If you're having problems, then they would dictate the frequency of return visits.

Cox Maze: Lone standing(not associated with valvular disease) atrial fibrillation may be cured with the cox maze procedure. Dr. Sirak at ohio state university has excellent cure rates performing the operation videothoracoscopically. I advise you go see him and his cardiology electrophysiology team.

Alternate technique: My understanding is that FIRM (focal impulse and rotor modulation) ablation is, perhaps, a more advanced ablation system using a very sophisticated catheter that, purportedly, maps locations/rotors that seemingly could trigger &amp; sustain AF. Success up to 80% in controlling AF for 2 years is reported, better than with standard ablation. Risks should be similar. Careful case selection is important!

Cardioversion: With procedure done successfully, patients feel good after it is done. A lot depends on extent of problem and your baseline health as well.

Maybe: This is a decision that is best made with the advise of a cardiac electrphysiology specialist. If proper testing indicates that your arrythmia is due a small and localized area of abnormal heart cells, than you could be a candidate for the proceedure. Paroxismal afib is probably more likely to meet the criteria for successful treatment. Chronic afib is less likely to respond.

No: Ablation is a procedure where a catheter is inserted through the vein and an area of the heart receives rf waves destroying the tissue causing/allowing the atrial fibrillation to occur.  Conventional therapy is rate control with medicine such as digoxin, beta blockers, or calcium channel blockers and maintaining regular rhythm with antiarrythmics. If failure then ablation is used with 75% success.
