Also called an arthrodesis. The porpose of a joint fusion is to stop motion of the joint. The joint surfaces are removed and some type of fixation may be added. The boney surfaces heal to each other essentially making one bone where there used to be two separated by the joint. A fusion may be done fr pain, deformity, weakness or dysfunction. Fusions are permanent but they can be reversed at times.
