Reverse pressure softening
Reverse pressure softening (RPS) is a method to improve latching during the first two weeks after birth. It is a simple intervention that is based on gentle positive pressure to soften the area of the areola surrounding the base of the nipple. This temporarily moves fluid backward and upward into the breast. RPS may be performed by the doctor or lactation consultant, and can even be taught to the mother over the telephone.
