Mitral valve disease is a condition in which a person has problems with his mitral valve, one of the two valves between the upper and lower chambers in the heart. A mitral valve can be leaky (not closing properly, thus allowing blood to flow backwards into the lungs) or it can be too tight (not opening enough, thus decreasing the amount of blood flowing forwards).
