Bowel resection

Bowel resection

Link copied

Bowel resection is the surgical removal of a portion of the small or large intestines due to an advancing disease. This procedure is performed if a portion of the bowel has been without oxygen for a long period and there is tissue death (necrosis), following discovery of some types of cancer, advanced infection of the bowel, or if the patient has repeated or persistent bowel obstruction (blockage). Some patients with diseases like ulcerative colitis or familial colon cancer may elect to have the procedure done to prevent cancer in the future.
