Mediastinitis
Mediastinitis can refer to 2 things. After heart surgery if an infection develops in the chest incision site which progresses deep to the bone and into the area below the bone we call this mediastinitis. This is a terrible complication but fortunately happens very rarely. Mediastinitis can also refer to chronic inflammation in the mediastinum (the area in the chest between the lungs.
