Manic depressive
is also called Bipolar Disorder. Mania is extreme hyperactivity, e.g., not sleeping, talking excessively, spending lots of money, etc. Depression is slowness, hopelessness, not going to work, etc. People who bounce back and forth the extremes of these states can be diagnosed w/BPD.
