Vitrectomy
A vitrectomy operation is a microsurgical procedure performed under a microscope in which the retinal surgeon removes vitreous gel from the back of the eye. A tiny cutting instrument is used as well as a fiberoptic light. . A variety of other instruments, such as a laser may be used, depending on the circumstances. The operation is usually performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient.
