New year, new health goals

It’s the New Year, and for many people that means resolving to make big changes in the upcoming year. For some, that means joining a gym, sticking to a diet, quitting smoking, giving up drinking or other health-related aspirations. While intentions are good, studies over the years have shown that a very small percentage of people report being successful with their New Year’s resolutions.

This year, make health a priority. Instead of setting goals that might be hard to achieve alone, consider setting smaller – yet impactful – health resolutions that can be supported by a personal doctor, such as:

  • Lowering cholesterol or blood pressure

Maybe it’s genetic, diet-related or due to lifestyle habits, but high cholesterol and high blood pressure can lead to many serious complications. Keep cholesterol and blood pressure in check by working with a doctor who can help monitor these conditions as you age.

  • Eating less sugar to prevent diabetes

Do you know if you’re at risk for diabetes? A personal doctor who knows you, your family history and lifestyle can help make sure this disease doesn’t sneak up on you.

  • Scheduling necessary health screenings such as mammograms, colonoscopies, and/or screening for prostate cancer

If you’re at a certain age or have genetic predispositions, your personal doctor will make sure you’re on schedule for necessary health screenings.

  • Completing regular blood work

Blood tests help your doctor check for conditions and diseases that might go unnoticed. If it’s been a while since you’ve had blood work, it’s a great time to get back on track with the help of your doctor.

  • Creating an exercise plan for heart health

Cardiovascular health is essential to longevity. A personal doctor can work with you on individualized exercise goals that are realistic and beneficial to heart health.

  • Reducing stress

Stress can affect your body and mind. A personal doctor can help you find ways to manage stress in a healthy, supportive way.

Having a long-term relationship with a doctor who knows you is proven to keep you healthier and reduce medical costs by helping you detect and manage health problems early on.
