About CHM and HealthTap

What is CHM's Virtual Care Solution, powered by HealthTap?

CHM's Virtual Care Solution (VCS), powered by HealthTap, provides easy access to virtual primary care and virtual urgent care for every CHM member through board-certified doctors who listen to you. At HealthTap you can pick and see the same caring primary care doctor who will get to know you and your medical history.

HealthTap is a virtual primary care physician practice available in all 50 states and D.C. Our online doctors are dedicated to building long-term relationships through listening and understanding each patient's unique needs.

What credentials do HealthTap doctors have?

HealthTap doctors are board-certified with an accredited American Board of Medical Specialities (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty board. They are based in the U.S., have at least one medical degree and have a valid and unrestricted license to practice in one or more U.S. states and no significant adverse professional action against the doctor's medical license.

Types of Care

Why do I need a primary care doctor?

Having a primary care physician (PCP) is crucial for your overall health and wellbeing. Numerous studies show that having a PCP decreases hospitalization and emergency room visits. It's also linked to longer life expectancy and greater satisfaction with the U.S. healthcare system.

Even if you're healthy, having a primary care doctor helps prevent serious illnesses, which is more effective and less expensive than treatment. For those with chronic issues like diabetes, hypertension, or asthma, having a primary care doctor can be life-saving.

HealthTap dedicated doctors are here to support you with compassionate and comprehensive care, ensuring you stay healthy and thrive.

What is the difference between virtual primary care and virtual urgent care?

Virtual Primary Care allows you to build a long-term relationship with a specific doctor whom you pick and see over time. This doctor gets to know you and understands your health history. You schedule virtual visits with the doctor at times that are convenient for you. It's recommended that everyone has a primary care doctor.

Virtual Urgent Care offers on-demand access to the first available doctor. It's useful for minor, acute issues when you need to see a doctor right away. It's important to note that HealthTap virtual visits are not intended for use in medical emergencies. Always call 911 or your local emergency service immediately if you think you have an emergency.

Both services are designed to provide convenient, accessible healthcare tailored to your needs, whether you're seeking comprehensive ongoing care or prompt attention for an unexpected health issue.

What types of medical issues can HealthTap help with?

Your HealthTap doctor can diagnose, treat and manage the full array of acute and chronic primary care conditions. If you have a problem that requires in-office examination or treatment, or that would benefit from the expertise of a medical or surgical specialist, your HealthTap doctor may refer you for that care. In those cases, we encourage you to consult the CHM Guidelines for sharing eligibility.

HealthTap Doctors can help with:

  • Wellness & Prevention: Health screenings, stress reduction, weight counseling, skin and hair care, supplements.
  • Chronic Conditions: High blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, allergies, high cholesterol, arthritis, thyroid disorders.
  • Women's Health: UTI, menopause, period problems, yeast infections, skin and hair care.
  • Children's Health (ages 1+): Cold & flu symptoms, diarrhea or constipation, skin rashes, allergies.
  • Men's Health: bladder or bowel issues, skin and hair care.
  • Senior Health (ages 65+): Muscle or joint pain, medication management, preventive health screenings.
  • Mental & Behavioral Health: Anxiety, depression, sleep issues, school or work stress.
  • …and much more!

Cost & Getting Started

Is HealthTap included in my CHM membership, or is there an additional cost?

Both primary care and urgent care video visits and messaging with your HealthTap primary care doctor are included—without charge for every CHM member! It's important to note that any associated lab, testing, or treatment costs are not included, however, eligible bills can be submitted to CHM for sharing per your program as outlined in the CHM Guidelines.

Who can access HealthTap services? Are there age or family member restrictions?

CHM members can access HealthTap virtual visits. Children must be 1 year or older to been seen by HealthTap providers, however, there are no other age restrictions! HealthTap caters to individuals across all age groups, including children ages 1+, teens, and adults.

Can I use the same account for my family members?

Everyone included on your CHM membership can enjoy no-cost access to HealthTap virtual care! Dependent children under 18 can be added under the primary caregiver's HealthTap account. Any dependents 18 or older will need to register for their own HealthTap account with a separate email.

What if I need an appointment for my child? I don't see them listed after entering my last name and member number.

Children on your CHM membership won't automatically appear in the user selection menu. Instead, you'll add your child under the primary caregiver's account after you register. If two parents are on the membership, we recommend registering any children under the account you'll be using most often (the person who is the primary caregiver for your children's healthcare needs).

Appointments

How do I get started with HealthTap?

To get started you need to create a HealthTap account. Click "Get started" to begin the registration process. You'll be asked to enter your last name and CHM member number, as well as an email address. You can then schedule a visit after logging in on the HealthTap website or mobile app.

How do I book a video appointment with a primary doctor and how does it work?

To book an appointment, all you need to do is 1) pick a doctor, 2) choose a time and 3) fill out pre-visit forms.

You can join a video visit from any device that has a stable internet connection—including your phone, tablet, or computer. For more information on specific steps or if you experience any technical issues during your visit, see this help article: https://support.healthtap.com/hc/en-us/articles/360057850071-How-do-I-schedule-and-start-a-Primary-Care-appointment-or-a-visit-for-specific-needs

What should I do if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?

You can cancel or reschedule an appointment directly in the HealthTap website or mobile app. You can also email [email protected] or call 1-888-974-2651.

What if I forget to ask all my questions during a visit?

As a CHM member, you can message your doctor for free for up to 90 days after your primary care appointment. Plus, have access to ask any health question to a panel of over 90,000 doctors—with 100% confidentiality.

Prescriptions, Lab Tests, & After the Visit

Can I get a prescription? How quickly can I get it?

Should your doctor feel that a prescription is necessary, they'll electronically transmit your prescription immediately to your selected pharmacy where it will be filled per the pharmacy's standard protocol. We always recommend checking with the pharmacy to see when it'll be ready for pickup.

It's important to note that only incident related prescriptions are eligible for sharing per the CHM Guidelines (in accordance with your selected program). You can submit any eligible medical bills to CHM for sharing after your appointment.

Are there any medications that HealthTap doctors cannot prescribe?

There are some medications that are always prescribed in-person and cannot be prescribed by HealthTap doctors (or any other doctor seeing a patient online). These include opioids and other controlled substances and some psychiatric and lifestyle drugs.

What if I need a lab test? Where can I get my lab work done?

When a HealthTap doctor orders lab tests for you in a virtual visit, HealthTap automatically sends the order to Quest Diagnostics. However, you don't have to go to a Quest Diagnostics to complete your lab test order. Instead, you can take a printout of your order to another lab service where you can book an appointment near you. You'll pay the lab when you arrive. When the results are ready and available for your HealthTap doctor to review, HealthTap will send you a notification so you can discuss the results with your doctor and create a plan.

It's important to note that testing or treatment costs aren't automatically included through CHM's Virtual Care Solution. However, eligible medical bills can be submitted for sharing per the CHM Guidelines.

Will I receive a summary of my consultation and information about any prescriptions or lab test orders?

You'll be able to access all visit notes, including information regarding any prescriptions, lab tests, referrals, or doctor's notes directly in the HealthTap website or mobile app.

Can I get referrals to specialists or in-person care?

Yes! HealthTap online doctors can recommend specialist or in-person care whenever it's clinically appropriate. You can then book an appointment with a specialist of your choice.

What happens if I need in-person care after a virtual visit?

During the appointment, our doctors will determine if you need to be seen by an in-person doctor and can provide a referral for specialist follow up. All visit documentation including referrals are accessible on the website/app and can be easily exported as a PDF to be shared with other healthcare providers.

Are all testing, treatments and referrals recommended by HealthTap doctors eligible for CHM sharing?

Please note that not all testing, treatment, or provider referrals recommended by HealthTap providers are eligible for CHM sharing. We always recommend consulting the CHM Guidelines for sharing eligibility based on your program.

It was quick & easy to book the appointment. I was able to get a PC appointment the next morning…within 12 hours! I connected and got my ongoing meds refilled. It was so nice for me living in a rural community.
