In brief: Possible,not certain

It is possible but not certain.
Often high functioning children with autism are aware that they are socially awkward, but don't know what to do about it. They also really want friends, but may have none because of their social problems. So they may develop anxiety/depressive disorders. Therapy/social skills groups can help as well as purposefully finding environments in which the child can thrive.
