In brief: Bleeding
Itp is low platelets without a clear reason for having them. For most women with itp, the platelets are low but still function well.
If they get low enough though, there may not be enough to prevent significant bleeding related to surgery or delivery. Some women with low platelets will not be able to get an epidural. Sometimes antibodies in the mom will also cause bleeding problems in the baby.
