In brief: Inherited or new
Neurofibromatosis can be passed from parent to child as an autosomal dominant trait, meaning an affected parent can pass a single gene to their son/daughter and they get the disease.
At least half of nf cases arise as a new gene mutation in a kid.

Dr. Ferguson is correct. In addition, there are several different types of NF with different clinical findings in each. Often your pediatrician is the first to suspect the diagnosis and a dermatologist can also help in cases that are not so clear.
