In brief: Kick counts count
Eat a bit of food or drink a small amount of juice, then lie on your left side and count how long it takes you to feel your baby move 10 times.
You should feel 10 movements within 2 hours. If you don't, call your provider. Often women feel that their baby isn't moving enough because they are too busy, or are distracted by other things going on. Stop and pay attention you'll get a better idea.

In brief: Call your provider
If you are worried because your baby is moving a lot less than normal, call your doctor or midwife.
S/he should be able to arrange for you to have a "nonstress test", which is where your baby's heart rate will be monitored for 30-45 minutes. This test can give a lot of information about how your baby is doing and whether there is cause for concern.

In brief: Call your doc!
Anytime there is a significant decrease in baby movement, lie down on your left side and see if movement picks up.
Sometimes it is just an issue of being distracted by the events of the day and movement isn't noticed. If movement does not pick up, call your provider. You should go in to be monitored. It is better to be safe than sorry and hopefully, you will be able to go home reassured.
