Could my baby have spina bifida if I don't take folate (folic acid)?

Still unlikely. It is clear that taking folic acid before and during a pregnancy lowers the risk of a child having spina bifida. There is not good reason not to take folate. It has no side effects. Even without folate, the chances are low.

Sorry for your loss. Spina bifida has several risk factors and this developmental disorder of the neural tube is a sign that something just didn't properly develop. Folate (folic acid) deficiency is a risk factor, anti-seizure medications, diabetes with poor control, obesity before pregnancy, and increased body temperature early in pregnancy has been linked as well. Is low folate (folic acid) why babies have cleft lip and palate?

May be. In experimental rats it has been shown that folate (folic acid) deficiency causes increased incidence of clefting of the face. Some people tried to extrapolate in human and feels giving extra Folic Acid during preganancy reduces the chance of having babies with cleft. But this has not been proven yet by clinical trial scientifically.
