In brief: Inflammation
Vasculitis is a general term for a group of uncommon diseases that feature inflammation of the blood vessels.
Treatment is directed toward decreasing the inflammation of the blood vessels and improving the function of affected organs. The most common treatment is with steroids - like prednisone. Other medications that can reduce the body's immune reponse can also be effective.

This could be either the veins or the arteries. A type of white blood cell sticks, for an unknown reason, to the wall of the vessel creating an inflammatory reaction. There are many types of vasculitis and many ways that researchers have categorized them over the decades. Some occur by themselves; others are associated with other diseases.
