In brief: Yes it can

Unfortunately, patients with a history of an attack of gout are at a higher risk for getting further attacks.
To reduce your potential for attackes, changes your diets by elininating many foods includind red meats and shellfish. No alcohol. See a physician and discuss medication options to reduce and possibly prevent further attacks.

In brief: Not always

In the original framingham study some patients followed for 14 years did not have a recurrence.
Most people will get recurrent attacks. You will need to be evaluated so the best therapy can be initiated. Other arthritis problems can sometimes mimic gout so the diagnosis needs to be confirmed usually by identifying the monosodium urate crystals in the joint or tissue like a tophus.
