What can I use to prevent my ceramic bowls from going to waste? Told to not use them but I am 60 so is it ok?

In brief: It depends on source

The glazes on many ceramics do contain lead and this has been shown to leach into foods, esp.
Acidic foods. Ceramics produced in the us since the 1990's is often lead-free but older ceramics & imported ceramics may have lead. Lead is unhealthy at any age. The fda advises limiting use of old or imported ceramics to special occasions. See http://www.Cprm.Gov.Br/pgagem/manuscripts/sheetsr.Htm.
