If you have cold sores does that mean you have same as genital herpes?

1 doctor agrees
In brief: Not necessarily
Herpes simplex virus 1 hangs out in the trigeminal ganglion (near the ear).
Outbreaks "usually" occur-mouth/face. Hsv 2 usually locates itself in the sacral ganglion (at lower spine). Outbreaks "usually" occur-genital area. The difference is "not always absolute"-either can reside in either or both parts of the body & infect orally/genitally. Viral culture, blood test, PCR can diagnose herpes type.
