In brief: Depends
Really depends on the severity, but the benefit with uc in severe cases there is a cure (ie total colectomy) where as with severe crohn's that is not the case.

In brief: Inflammatory Bowel
Any inflammatory bowel disease (ibd) spectrum are systemic illnesses.
Ulcerative colitis primarily involves the lining of the large intestine whereas crohn's is transmural (full thickness involvement by) inflammation of any part of the GI tract (from mouth to anus). Both involve similar pathways of inflammation, are similarly treated, can increase the risk of colon cancer, & may require surgery.

In brief: Pick your poison
Crohn's (cd) and ulcerative colitis (uc) together make up the disease entity named inflammatory bowel disease.
They are not mutually exclusive so that you may have cd with uc features or vice-versa. The question is difficult because both diseases may be either acute or chronic and symptoms can vary from mildly irritating to life threatening and needing emergency surgery.
