My dr gave me bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for a std, is this okay?

Can a combination of bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and flagyl cure an std?

Depends on the STD. There are 20-30 bacteria and viruses that cause STDs. Some would be cured with these antibiotics but others would not. Only one, trichomonas, is reliably cured by metronidazole (Flagyl). Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) would work against some cases of gonorrhea or chlamydia, but not against anything else -- and it is not the best drug for any STD. Sounds like you'd better check back with the doctor who prescribed them. Read more...

I have bacterial orchitis not caused by an std. Anything I can take BESIDES fluroquinolones and bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim)? That will effectively work? Please help me : (

See urologist or ID. Presumably tested for STDs? Gonorrhea and chlamydia are the most common causes of epididymitis or orchitis at your age. If diagnosis of non-STD bacterial infection is correct, treatment depends on which antibiotics are active against that bacteria. Usually Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) or a quinolone would work, but not always. Check for TB, testicular cancer. Discuss w/ urologist or an infectious diseases specialist.
