In brief: Not necessarily

Slipped/herniated discs are quite common and many people function normally.
Unfortunately, some experience debilitating pain which cannot be adequately treated etc..And thus not able to work. If your job is relative light and you don't have much problem with pain, no reason to stop working. Make sure you keep your back strong/healthy--regular strengtehing exercise. Consult your doc.. Good luck.
