In brief: Outgrowths

They appear as growths from the skin surface and may feel soft or hard.
Sometimes they may already be draining whitish material which is tooth paste consistency and may have an odor.

In brief: A raised lump.

Unless it's infected, then it's a raised red lump! sometimes they are more felt than seen, but they are still the same thing--entrapped sebum within a cyst cavity whose cells produce the sebum. Popping them does not get rid of them since the cyst cells that make the sebum remain.
The sac cavity must be surgically removed (or killed by infection and neglect, causing scar) with a much tinier scar.
