What congenital anomolies are associated with placenta previa?

Nothing specific. In 3 deades of pediatrics and much of that dealing with birth defects, i know of no anomaly that is linked to placenta previa. The selection of an implantation site for the embryo and development of the placenta in a previa location appears to be random.

Waiting, Watching. Previa: Placenta overlies the cervix/birth canal. Gr 1 means placenta is close, Gr 4 means it's directly overlying/blocking the baby's exit -- high chance of preterm labor & bleeding; you'd need a C/S at 36-37wks. More common in woman w/ hx of C/S & smoking. Not much you can do but wait. If dx'ed early, the uterus still grows/stretches and a placenta can migrate away even in 3rd tri. Follow w/ US. If I have placenta previa, when am I most likely to bleed?

Hopefully @ delivery. If your previa never resolves, i hope you have bleeding only at your c-section. Most docs will give steroids at 24 weeks, perform serial ultrasounds to see if it resolves, and performs an abdominal delivery at 37 weeks if still present. Report any bleeding since an intial bleed may "herald" the start of hemorrhage, and listen to your doc. Earlier delivery may be needed if bleeding develops. Read more...
Third trimester. Most cases of placenta previa wither resolve or start bleeding by the third trimester (>28 weeks). Avoid all ssris, aspirin-like drugs (nsaids, motrin, aleve, advil) and only take regular tylenol (acetaminophen) during pregnancy. Avoid intercourse and heavy lifting/exercise until delivery or resolution of your placenta previa. Serial ultrasounds with an experienced maternal-fetal medicine specialist are warranted! Read more...
