Does Xanax (alprazolam) work for panic disorder?

Xanax (alprazolam) Like other benzodiazepines, xanax (alprazolam) works to block panic attacks, very potent, but long-term use leads to tolerance, and difficvulty coming off of it.
Anticipatory anxiety. In my experience the drugs that r most effective r the ssris & in tough cases maois--xanax is used as an adjunctive therapy for anticipatory anxiety.
Yes. Too well in fact. Most every patient with panic disorder will say that they feel much better right away after taking xanax (alprazolam). All medications in the class called benzodiazapines (xanax (alprazolam) (alprazolam) is one of them) do the same thing. The problem is, they are extremely habit forming and hard to stop. I try and avoid these medications in my practice.
Xanax (alprazolam) panic. By itself Alprazolam does not work. Alprazolam has a very short stay in the body causing tolerance, dependence and rebound anxiety. Between 27% and 37% of patients suffer from comorbid substance use disorder (kessler et al., 2006) and Alprazolam does not confersan advantage over other benzodiazepines in panic disorder(moylan et al., 2011) cognitive therapy and ssri are very effective.

For panic disorder w/ agoraphobia & gad. Currently take xanax (alprazolam). Cannot tolerate ssris, gabbapentin or lamotragine. Is there anything else?

Yes. Yes, for medications there are still tricyclics like Pamelor (nortriptyline) and desipramine; also maoi's. There is always psychotherapy, a cornerstone of treatment for the conditions you're suffering. Plus i've found helpful results with classical homeopathy, especially when people are very sensitive to pharmaceuticals. Acupuncture offers promise also. Can Xanax alprazolam also help with depression as well as anxiety and panic disorder?

Maybe, but danger. Upjohn originally proposed xanax (alprazolam) in the 1970's as an antidepressant, showing effectiveness like tricyclics. The fda only allowed it as an anti-anxiety agent "that doesn't cause depression" [like others do]. It's a benzodiazepine; it may have some antidepressant effects but isn't effective alone. Induces dependency very easily and is hard to get off of. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22786504. Read more...

Which medicine is better for panic attacks, ativan or xanax (alprazolam)? I suffer from severe panic disorder and I am currently taking ativan and lexapro, which helps, but I still have constant, extreme attacks. I have been told by others who have the sa

Both . Both Ativan (lorazepam) and xanax (alprazolam) belong to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. They can both be used to treat panic disorder and both have similar side effects. Most important side effects are those affecting central nervous system: drowsiness, daytime sedation, memory impairment, physical and psychological dependence, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms. Different people respond differently to these drugs, something that depends on a person's age, general health (in particular presence of liver disease) and concurrent use of other drugs. Your doctor's decision to prescribe Ativan is most likely based on factoring these and other aspects of your general health into this decision. There is no downside of asking your doctor about xanax vs. Ativan for treatment of your panic disorder. Read more...
Dr . Dr baskys provided very good information in his response. There have been a number of deaths attributed to the immediate release form of xanax (alprazolam). This causes concern by many prescribers. There is an extended release form as well. If you are continuing to have break through panic attacks on Ativan and lexapro, you might wish to consider a non-medication adjunct: medical acupuncture. It is a safe, non- intrussive method of dealing with anxiety disorders. Take care. Read more...
