What causes pernicious anemia and a mild increase in gamma globulin?

Pernicious anemia... Is due to B12 def arising from loss of intrinsic factor production by parietal cells in the stomach and required for B12 absorption in the gut. Anything that produces B12 def can cause these symptoms. Classically, pa is one such diagnosis that is due to destruction of parietal cells by the immune system (ie., an autoimmune disorder). I suspect elevated igg is true, true and unrelated. See your dr.

How does pernicious anemia cause people to have achlorhydria?

Common cause. Both pernicious anemia (inability to absorb vitamin b12) and achlorhydria (inability of the stomach to make acid) result from the same underlying problem -- autoimmune destruction of the inner mucosal lining of the stomach ("autoimmune atrohpic gastritis"). Read more...
The other way around. Achlorhydria (lack of adequate gastric acid production and secretion) is one of the causes of pernicious anemia and not the other way around. Normal gastric acid is essential for adequate absorption of vitamin b-12. Vitamin b-12 deficiency in turn causes pernicious anemia. Read more...

Does pernicious anemia cause high serum b12?

Low vitamin B12. pernicious anemia is a LOW vitamin B12 state. This occurs when the body fails to make enough of a specific protein to enable the body to absorb vitamin B12. This usually occurs when the immune system attacks a specific cell in the stomach that produces the needed protein. Since the body can't absorb vitamin B12 through the stomach it can be given in a shot and even under the tongue. Read more...

The two are linked. This finding goes back to 1964, believe it or not: http://www.Ncbi.Nlm.Nih.Gov/pmc/articles/pmc1552204/?Page=1 there are autoimmune antibodies in both conditions, so while one might not cause the other, the two are related. Read more...
