What is an exacerbation?

Worsening or recurre. An exacerbation means a process has an acute recurrence of a previous or chronic problem. An acute exacerbation of COPD would be someone with COPD that is stable and gets an acute viral infection and the COPD is exacerbated or made to flair up or worsen. Same with a bad back and one lifts improperly and then has an acute exacerbation of chronic back pain. Hope this helps. +.
