Can you please tell me how the drug amitriptyline causes constipation?

Bowel activity. Your bowel activity is regulated via autonomic tone, and neurotransmitter balance is part of this. Cholinergic impulses can make your bowel contract and move stool along. If anything disturbs these impulses, your bowel will become sluggish. Amitriptylene has strong anti-cholinergic properties -- so at a high enough dose, your bowel activity slows down. The result can be constipation. Read more...

Was given amitriptyline for lack of full anal sphincter function (basically, poop gets stuck & I can urge it out). Not constipated. Will this help it?

Not sure. Amitriptylene has certain side effects which oppose bowel activity and slow it down. Constipation can result. If the doctor's idea is that your anal sphincter tone is too high, amitriptylene could help. I'll add that if this doesn't work, certain homeopathic remedies may be more useful for you. You could consult a professional homeopath to receive the one most likely to work for you. Read more...

Was on amitriptyline 10mg, doc wanted to reduce it to half because I was constipated. Been 5 days at half, and now experiencing diarrhea. Ibs? I've had normal colonoscopy, blood work, xray. Worried.

May have to . Adjust your dose up-and-down according to whether you have constipation or diarrhea. It does indeed sound like given what has gone on and I am aware of your past history, that this is ibs. There's no need to be worried. I would talk to your doctor about the option of adjusting the Amitriptyline between five and 10 mg to manage your symptoms. Best wishes. Read more...
