In brief: Ear tubes

If simple medical managment has failed, ear tubes can easily bypass the eustachian tube and alleviate the pressure.
Mot commonly placed in children under a brief anesthetic, tubes can be placed in adults in the office. For a brief video on middle ear fluid and the ear tube procedure, see http://www.Youtube.Com/watch?V=aitswaq711k.

In brief: Ventilation tubes

There is very little treatment directly to restore ET tube function if it has been present for years.
If it is of recent onset, decongestants, steroids may help. It there is fluid in the middle ear and the problem lasts for more than 6 weeks, ventilation tubes inserted through the ear drum can give you significant relief.

In brief: Clogged ear/ hearing

When the eustachian tube is blocked and the ear feels clogged hearing can be reduced or muffled.
If this occurred during a cold, and has persisted even though the cold is long resolved, then you may want to see an ENT to check if there is fluid in your middle ear and if you have hearing loss. Treatment will be based on findings. If this occurred due to allergies, antihistamines, nasal are helpful.
