In brief: Sometimes you can't
Severe depression requires professional help.
However, if your depression is mild, try treating yourself well (healthy food, sleep, light-mod exercise), socialize, keep busy with achievable tasks, challenge your negative thoughts & self-criticisms. Maybe also try omega-3 supplements, st john's wort, mindfulness meditation, self-help books, talk to a trusted relative/friend/clergy. Many options.

Not a great idea to attempt managing depression on your own, particularly if you are having any suicidal ideation. Unless this is situational depression medical intervention or at least evaluation is needed.

The number of "depressions" that are managed without medical intervention or evaluation far exceeds the number that are. As I wrote, severe depression (& suicide risk certainly counts) calls for a professional. Short of that, literally millions of people find help in natural remedies and various forms of self-help, not to mention non-MD therapists, counselors, etc.
