In brief: Multifactorial

Cleft lip/palate may be an isolated deformities or may be a part of a syndrome.
Nonsyndrome cleft are said to be multifactorial in origin such as genetic predisposition, environmental factors especially at the time of embryonic development (alcohol, maternal illess, smoking, and the use of drug such as phenytoin). Cleft lip could occur with or without cleft palate.
