In brief: Encephalitis

Brain swelling or edema is a situation in which inflammation, from infection causes brain tissue to swell.
It is possible for the swelling to resolve but the course to normal can be very long due to the effect of the infection. Brain paosy refers to weakness or paralysis of the muscles due to an abnormality of brain function. Either can be fatal and either can resolve.
