Pain behind the ear and in upper jaw with swollen glands what causes this?

Likely infection. Pain such as the one you are reporting can occur by a nearby infection such as sinusitis, sore throat, skin infection etc. If such complaints are experienced then one should definitely see their physician to be worked up the various causes.
