In brief: Either way

A deviated septum is simply crooked or displaced bone and cartilage inside the nose.
This can be caused by trauma but many times forms during growth and development of the nose. Some times surgery can be helpful to straighten a deviated septum and improve breathing through the nose.

In brief: Deviated septum

A deviated septum is a common issue.
It can be caused by trauma, position in utero and even during the birth process. If there are symptoms like nasal obstruction, snoring or recurrent sinusitis, have your nose evaluated by a board certified otolaryngologist.

In brief: Many born with it

Actually most people have some degree of septum deviation, often mild and unnoticed, and nothing need to be done.
More severe deviation can cause chronic nasal obstruction to that side causing difficulty with breathing, at times needing surgical correction. Trauma can obviously cause deviation. If it is bothering you, consult your doc/ent for possible corrective surgery... Good luck.
