Fetal echocardiograms detect the majority of major heart malformations. Minor problems including small defects in the septum and some less common ones may easily be missed. This is true on Level 3 Ultrasound (done by cardiologist). Screening ultrasound done in the Obsterician's office is usually less sensitive and specific anomalies may be missed.
