In brief: CT vs. Ultrasound

A ct is excellent at seeing most pathology of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis.
An ultrasound is far less expensive, has no radiation involved, and is a great screening tool. An ultrasound is great for detecting gallstones, and kidney related issues, but might lead to a ct or MRI for detecting more obscure pathology.

In brief: Different things

Ct is good for solid organ tumors, bowel obstruction, abscesses, inflammatory conditions like diverticulitis, bone pathologies, kidney stones.
It is great for both focused studies and more general investigation, and can be tweaked to be quite sensitive for a great many things. Ultrasound is great for focused studies on liver, blood flow, fluid collections, etc. Both can be effective.
